Throughout Ontario, many high schools have added "focus" courses to their Physical Education programs. At Stayner Collegiate Institute we have added a personal fitness course and hockey course to the course offerings in the 2013/14 school year. Our hockey focus course is a grade ten course and classes take place at the school and arena. The course is offered to male and female students of all levels of skill and ability and our goal is to deepen their appreciation, understanding and skill level through various on and off-ice activities throughout the semester. During the first two weeks of class, students took part in twenty fitness and skill tests to determine their current level of fitness and hockey-related skills. Our goal is to improve upon the baseline scores through a combination of dryland fitness and skills training, classroom instruction, video analysis and on-ice skills training at the Stayner Arena.
We also hope to build on their leadership skills through various opportunities within the school and greater community. In the month of September and October, students will be taking part in planning a 4 on 4 hockey tournament to be held on November 15th. Our goal is to make this tournament a first-class on and off-ice experience for the kids. For more information, clink on the tournament link above.
